Studying Abroad

When studying abroad there are several routes you can take at Oklahoma State University.

session-infoYour first step for this would be to go to a study abroad information session which are twice a week on Tuesday’s at 4:30 p.m. in classroom building 321 and Wednesday’s at 12:30 p.m. in classroom building 208. After that you will need to meet with a study abroad adviser to discuss programs, funding, and other topics.

Next you need to figure out when you want to study abroad. You can go for a semester, or a year in fall, spring, or summer semester, winter intercession or spring break.

Then you will decide which type of program you want to use. There are 5 different types of programs.

1. Short-term faculty led programs

These are usually one or two courses led by a faculty member during summer, winter or spring break. It would be an OSU course taken abroad in most cases.

2. Semester and academic year programs or reciprocal exchange

With this you are still enrolled at OSU and would receive OSU residential credit. You would still pay OSU most of your tuition and fees, but would be paying housing, meals and other costs to the host school.

3. Affiliated approved programs or transfer credit study

This program comes in two forms. You are able to direct enroll to the host school, this would give you transfer credit from that institution. You can also study with an organization or other United States university.

4. National student exchange

There are two different ways you can do this. You can temporarily transfer to the host school paying tuition or fees associated with it, or you can stay enrolled at OSU like in reciprocal exchange.

5. International internships and service learning

This includes temporary job placement, short-term volunteer work, conducting research or teaching.

Through affiliated approved programs you would need to choose a program like American Institute for Foreign Study, Academic Programs International, Cultural Experiences Abroad or many more.

Through the program choices you will decide where you want to study. You can study almost anywhere. Most programs will have the same school and class choices to choose from, so you would need to decide which program you will want to use.

From there you need to figure our how you will fund yourself through scholarships, grants, financial aid and/or your own money.

The options are endless on where you can go and study, and what you can do. The biggest obstacle to overcome is just getting up and doing it.
