The Excellence in Journalism conference was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. I spent September 17 through the 22 there, staying at the Sheraton hotel. I attended as a Native American journalist fellow through a sponsorship by Columbia University.
Saturday, when I arrived, my friends and I explored the French Quarter. I absolutely loved the French Quarter, it was my favorite place in NOLA. We got our tarot cards read by a lady in front of St. Louis Cathedral. I later returned and had my cards read again. We ate at the Napoleon House, I had the Italian Muffuletta which I definitely recommend. My friends and I went to Bourbon Street, not being 21 yet there weren’t many places we could get in. We did have fun, but it probably would have been more fun at 21.
Sunday I had a great burger at Chartres House for lunch. That afternoon, I explored the French Quarter with my roommate. We ate at Stanley Restaurant, I had delicious pancakes with ice cream. That night the conference had a reception at the House of Blues; this was probably my favorite thing in NOLA. I had so much fun dancing and singing to the music.
Monday I ate at the Ruby Slipper. I had the Croque Madame, which was amazing. I went to dinner at the Market Cafe with friends and then explored more of the French Quarter.
On our last full day in NOLA, my roommate and I ate at the famous Cafe du Monde. We thought it would have more than beignets, but we were both still very pleased. Be warned, they only accept cash. We then browsed the French Market, they have so many cool souvenirs.
I really enjoyed NOLA. I definitely recommend going to the House of Blues, Cafe du Monde, and the French Market.
