Photography While Traveling

Something I have been researching lately has been photography while traveling, specifically while on your own. There are a few ways you can go about doing this.

To get pictures of yourself:

  1. Camera+Stand+Clicker
This is probably the easiest if you are on your own. All you have to do is line up the shot and take a few pictures with the clicker. You can also use the timer as well. A con of this option is lugging around all of this equipment and the added weight it could potentially add to your bag at the airport. I have never done this while traveling, but I have in other instances.
  2. Ask a stranger
Most people wont feel comfortable handing over their phone or camera to a stranger, but most people will not say no if you ask them politely. When asking for a stranger to take your picture make sure to be very specific in how you want it done and for multiple shots. You should also ask if they know how to use the camera, you do not want to end up with a blurry shot because they did not know how to use your camera.

  3. Selfie
You can use a selfie stick, or just your arm, but this is perfectly acceptable when you are on your own.

It would be easier and more fun to bring a friend along with you. Not only can you get pictures for each other individually, but you might have more fun too.

To get pictures of everything else:

  1. Cameras
I definitely recommend getting a DSLR. In my opinion they shoot way better quality than a point and shoot camera, but ultimately it is going to be up to the traveler. Below you can see the New Orleans picture I took with a DSLR, the Eiffel tower picture I took with a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot camera, and the skyline of New York City I took with an old point and shoot camera.
  2. Phones
There is nothing wrong with using your phone, in some cases it can be easier than lugging your camera equipment around. The only fault I find is the waste of space on your phone, or the battery drainage.

  3. GoPro
I do not own one of these but they look like a lot of fun. These could be really useful for action shots like zip-lining, white water rafting, or surfing. Plus they are waterproof where your phone or camera may not be.

When it comes down to it, what you take the pictures with and how is up to the traveler. You should always take pictures though so you can remember and look back on all of the memories.
