Things to do in Gunnison, Colorado

To escape the Oklahoma heat, my grandparents and I discovered Gunnison, Colorado. There is so much to do there that we weren’t able to do everything.

Your first stop should be the visitors center. They have brochures and a calendar for just about everything to do there.

If you kayak or paddle at any experience level, there are plenty of rivers and lakes for you. I went kayaking with my grandpa and our friend Jamie on the Gunnison. We put in at Cooper Ranch and stopped at Wilson’s Landing. If you want rapids I would suggest looking elsewhere, it was still a very nice area to paddle.

Another interesting activity is the Pioneer Museum. It is a lot more fun than you would think, there are many interesting finds there. Make sure to go on a day that the weather isn’t bad because there are a lot of exhibits outside.

If you want to white water raft there is a great trip on the Taylor River. The Three Rivers Resort offers trips on the Upper and Lower Taylor. We did the Upper Taylor with a 1 pm take off and it was a blast. Our guide, Daniel, was really great. Do the Russian roulette if he asks, you won’t be disappointed. It was $55 per person for the Upper but for $20 more you could add the extender, by the end we all wished we would have added it. Even though it felt like a short trip we were there until 4 pm.

We also hiked the Black Canyon. It is really beautiful there, the views are breath taking. We went on the Oak Flat Loop trail which is considered strenuous. It was tough considering we thought we were on an easy trail.

All in all, Gunnison is a great place to see.
